A photo taken on a modern phone is usually somewhere around 4000 pixels wide and three to six megabytes. Put that straight onto a website and the visitor downloads the whole thing, even though it is being displayed in a box maybe 800 pixels wide. Do it half a dozen times on one page and you have built something that takes fifteen seconds to load on mobile data.
The fix is unglamorous and very effective: make the image no bigger than it needs to be, then save it in a format built for the web. A four megabyte photo will often come out under 150KB with no visible difference on screen. That is the same picture arriving roughly thirty times faster.
Format matters as much as size. A lot of sites serve photographs as PNG, which is designed for logos and flat graphics and is a poor fit for photos, often producing a file several times larger than it needs to be. Photographs want WebP or JPEG. Keep PNG for logos, icons and anything that needs a transparent background.
